Peter Stephen Paul Brook (sündinud 21. märtsil 1925 Londonis) on inglise teatri- ja filmilavastaja.

Ta on võitnud mitu Tony ja Emmy auhinda ning ka Laurence Olivier Awardi, Praemium Imperiale'i ja Prix Italia.[1] Teda on nimetatud meie aja suurimaks teatrilavastajaks.[2]

Alates 1970ndatest elab ta Prantsusmaal Pariisis, kus juhtis aastail 1974–2011 sealset eksperimentaalteatrit Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord.

1964. a lavastas Brook Kuninglikus Shakespeare'i Teatris Peter Weissi näidendi "Marat/Sade" ingliskeelse variandi. Aasta hiljem mängiti seda lavastust Broadwayl ning 1966. a võitis lavastus Broadwayl jagatava Tony auhinna neli kategooriat. See sai parima näidendi, parima meeskõrvaltegelase, parima kostüümikunstniku ja parima lavastaja auhinna.

Noorusaastad

Peter Brook sündis Londonis Lätist emigreerunud Simon ja Ida (snd Jansen) Brooki teise pojana.[3][4] Peter Brooki vanem vend Alexis Brook (1920–2007) oli psühhiaater ja psühhoterapeut.[5] Tema onupoeg oli Moskva Akadeemilise Satiiriteatri pikaajaline juht Valentin Plutšek.[6] Brook õppis esmalt Westminsteri erakoolis (Westminster School) ja Greshami erakoolis (Gresham's School) ning omandas seejärel kõrghariduse Oxfordi Magdalen College'is.

Karjäär

Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Pariis

1943. aastal esietendus Londoni teatris The Torch Theatre Peter Brooki esmalavastus "Faust", sellele järgnes 1945. aastal teatris The Chanticleer Theatre Jean Cocteau näidendi "The Infernal Machine" taasesitus. Aastal 1947 töötas ta Stratford-upon-Avonis näidendite "Romeo ja Julia" ning "Asjatu armuvaev" lavastusassistendina. Aastatel 1947–1950 oli ta Londoni Kuningliku Ooperimaja produktsioonidirektor. Samal perioodil lavastas Brook Straussi ooperi "Salome", millele tegi lavakujunduse Salvador Dalí, ja taaslavastas Puccini ooperi "Boheem", milles kasutati 1899. aastal loodud lavakujundust.

Aastal 1970 asutas Brook koos Micheline Rozaniga Rahvusvahelise teatriuuringute keskuse (The International Centre for Theatre Research (CIRT)), mis koondab paljudest rahvustest näitlejaid, tantsijaid, muusikuid ja teisi loovisikuid. Aastast 1974 paikneb see keskus Pariisis teatris Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord.[7] 2008. a teatas Brook, et ta astub Théâtre des Bouffes du Nordi kunstilise juhi kohalt tagasi.[8] Kolm aastat hiljem andis ta juhtimise üle Olivier Mantei'le ja Olivier Poubelle'ile.[9]

Isiklikku

1951. aastal abiellus Peter Brook näitlejanna Natasha Parryga (1930–2015).[10] Neil on kaks last: Irina Brook ning näitleja ja lavastaja Simon Brook.

Mõjutajad

Kuigi Brooki on paljuski mõjutanud Antonin Artaud' looming ja Julmuse teatri ideed, oli Peter Brooki suurim eeskuju siiski Joan Littlewood, keda ta on nimetanud "20. sajandi keskpaiga Britannia kõige inspireerivamaks ja tegutsema ärgitavamaks lavastajaks". Brookile on loomingulist ainest andnud ka Jerzy Grotowski eksperimentaalteatri ideed,[11] Bertolt Brecht, Chris Covics ja Vsevolod Meierhold, samuti G. I. Gurdjieffi,[12] Edward Gordon Craigi[13] ja Matila Ghyka looming.[14]

Koostöö

Kogu oma karjääri jooksul tegi Brook koostööd suure hulga erinevate lavastajate, kirjanike ning näitlejatega, kellest tuntuimad on näitlejad Paul Scofield ja Glenda Jackson, kunstnik Georges Wakhévitch ning kirjanikud Ted Hughes ja William Golding. Wakhévitchiga puutus Brook esmakordselt kokku Londonis, kus tal oli võimalus jälgida Jean Cocteau balleti "Le Jeune Homme et la Mort" ("Noormees ja surm") valmimist. Wakhévitchi ülesandeks oli luua balletile lavakujundus. Tema tööd nähes oli Brook veendunud, et just sellist kujundajat oli ta "juba kaua aega otsinud".[15]
