Feedback on movement names

Tere. Apologies if you are not reading this message in your native language. Palun aita emakeelde tõlkida if necessary. Aitäh!

There are a lot of conversations happening about the future of our movement names. We hope that you are part of these discussions and that your community is represented.

Since 16 June, the Foundation Brand Team has been running a survey in 7 languages about 3 naming options. There are also community members sharing concerns about renaming in a Community Open Letter.

Our goal in this call for feedback is to hear from across the community, so we encourage you to participate in the survey, the open letter, or both. The survey will go through 7 July in all timezones. Input from the survey and discussions will be analyzed and published on Meta-Wiki.

Thanks for thinking about the future of the movement, --The Brand Project team, 2. juuli 2020, kell 22:44 (EEST)

Note: The survey is conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement.

Contributions by บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย

User:บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย is a contributor based at the Thai Wikipedia who has created machine translations of articles and spamming them over a wide range of Wikipedia languages, including here. While the subjects of the articles he has created are (mostly) notable, the mistake of creating articles in languages he does not understand has led to extremely bad quality, probably at the level of unintelligibility. Unless local editors are willing to start a clean-up effort, I suggest that his contributions be deleted. IMPORTANT: Admin activity review

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, interface administrator, etc.) was adopted by global community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis with no inactivity policy. To the best of our knowledge, your wiki does not have a formal process for removing "advanced rights" from inactive accounts. This means that the stewards will take care of this according to the admin activity review.

We have determined that the following users meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no logged actions for more than 2 years):

  1. Egon (administrator)

The user will receive a notification soon, asking them to start a community discussion if they want to retain some or all of their rights. If the users do not respond, then their advanced rights will be removed by the stewards.

However, if you as a community would like to create your own activity review process superseding the global one, want to make another decision about these inactive rights holders, or already have a policy that we missed, then please notify the stewards on Meta-Wiki so that we know not to proceed with the rights review on your wiki. Thanks, Einsbor (arutelu) 2. veebruar 2021, kell 13:00 (EET)

Proposal: Set two-letter project shortcuts as alias to project namespace globally

Palun aita emakeelde tõlkida

Hello everyone,

I apologize for posting in English. I would like to inform everyone that I created a new global request for comment (GRFC) at Meta Wiki, which may affect your project: m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

In this GRFC, I propose that two-project shortcuts for project names will become a default alias for the project namespace. For instance, on all Wikipedias, WP will be an alias to the Wikipedia: namespace (and similar for other projects). Full list is available in the GRFC.

This is already the case for Wikivoyages, and many individual projects asked for this alias to be implemented. I believe this makes it easier to access the materials in the project namespace, as well as creating shortcuts like "WP:NPOV", as well as helps new projects to use this feature, without having to figure out how to request site configuration changes first.

As far as I can see, Vikipeedia currently does not have such an alias set. This means that such an alias will be set for you, if the GRFC is accepted by the global community.

I would like to ask all community members to participate in the request for comment at Meta-Wiki, see m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions about this proposal.

Best regards,
--Martin Urbanec (talk) 18. veebruar 2021, kell 16:12 (EET)

Universal Code of Conduct – 2021 consultations

Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2

The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a universal baseline of acceptable behavior for the entire Wikimedia movement and all its projects. The project is currently in Phase 2, outlining clear enforcement pathways. You can read more about the whole project on its project page.

Drafting Committee: Call for applications

The Wikimedia Foundation is recruiting volunteers to join a committee to draft how to make the code enforceable. Volunteers on the committee will commit between 2 and 6 hours per week from late April through July and again in October and November. It is important that the committee be diverse and inclusive, and have a range of experiences, including both experienced users and newcomers, and those who have received or responded to, as well as those who have been falsely accused of harassment.

To apply and learn more about the process, see Universal Code of Conduct/Drafting committee.

2021 community consultations: Notice and call for volunteers / translators

From 5 April – 5 May 2021 there will be conversations on many Wikimedia projects about how to enforce the UCoC. We are looking for volunteers to translate key material, as well as to help host consultations on their own languages or projects using suggested key questions. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these roles, please contact us in whatever language you are most comfortable.

To learn more about this work and other conversations taking place, see Universal Code of Conduct/2021 consultations.

Global bot policy changes

Line numbering coming soon to all wikis

-- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) 12. aprill 2021, kell 18:08 (EEST)

Viidete eelvaade: Does Estonian Wikipedia want to be among the first wikis to get previews for references?

[Sorry, for writing in English. It would be great if you could add a translation.]

Reference Previews and Page Previews next to each other.

In the near future, editors and readers can get pop-ups for references in the same style as Page Previews: The feature called Reference Previews will soon be deployed to a first group of wikis as a default feature. Reference Previews show you a reference in a small pop-up when you hover over the reference number in square brackets. This way, you can look up a reference without jumping down to the bottom of the page. More than 2,000 people on et.wikipedia are currently testing Reference Previews as a beta feature. After many months of testing, bug fixing and other improvements, the feature will soon be enabled as a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia, probably on May 5.

Would Estonian Wikipedia also want to get the feature early? We were thinking it would be a good candidate because on Estonian Wikipedia, there is no default gadget for previewing references yet. (Here’s a link to translatewiki, where the interface of the feature can be translated).

If you want to know more about the feature, please have a look at the project page or write me a message on my talk page. We would be very happy to have Estonian Wikipedia on board! -- For the Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Germany, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 21. aprill 2021, kell 12:09 (EEST)

Peaks saama, vt m:WMDE Technical Wishes/ReferencePreviews#Opt-out feature.

Election Volunteers

Hello. I apologize for sending a message in English. Please help translate to your language.

As you already know, this year (July-August) there will be an election to the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. In this regard, the Wikimedia Foundation is trying to improve some parameters, including the WMF wants to improve the voter turnout. To do this, we are looking for volunteers from local communities to help us in this matter, as volunteers from specific communities know their community better.

Volunteers during elections should perform the following functions:

  • Promote the election in their communities’ channels
  • Organize discussions about the election in their communities
  • Translate messages for their communities

Do you want to be an Election Volunteer and connect your community with this movement effort? Check out more details about Election Volunteers and add your name next to the community you will support in this table or get in contact with a facilitator.

Kindly. --Mehman (WMF) (arutelu) 9. mai 2021, kell 19:45 (EEST)

please test: Growth team features

Hello! Sorry to use English. Palun aita emakeelde tõlkida.

I'm Trizek (WMF). I work as a community relations specialist for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm here to share a message from the Growth team.

As you may already know, the Growth team's goal is to create features that would help newcomers. Our goal is to help newcomers when they edit for the first time and also to increase the retention of new editors. Several wikis already have these features since a long time now. Working with these wikis, the Growth team found evidence of the efficiency of these new features.

These features will be available for all new accounts on your Wikipedia starting on the week of August 23, 2021. This way your Wikipedia will offer more options for newcomers to make good first edits and become community members.

Which features?

The newcomer homepage (here on Portuguese Wikipedia, displayed in English)

We have created several features to help them, and also to help community members who help them :

  • Newcomer homepage: a new special page, the best place for a newcomer to get started. Please visit it at Special:Homepage It includes:
    • Newcomer tasks: a feed of task suggestions that help newcomers learn to edit. Newcomers have been making productive edits through this feed! Know more about this tool.
    • Mentorship module [optional]: each newcomers has a direct link to an experienced user (see below). This way, they can ask questions about editing Wikipedia, less the need to find where to ask for assistance.
    • Impact module: the user sees how many pages views articles they edit received. Have a look at Special:Impact for yours!
  • Help panel: a platform to provide resources to newcomers while they are editing. If they do some suggested tasks, they are guided step-by-step on the process of editing.
  • Welcome Survey: communities can know why newcomers create an account on Wikipedia. You can see it at Special:WelcomeSurvey.

The features available right now in your preferences (here and there) so that you can try them. They are not yet visible to newcomers.

How to help?

First, we need help to translate the features. At the moment, most of the messages newcomers will see on your Wikipedia are in English, some of them have been translated using machine translation. Please help translate the interface (done on translatewiki.net. It needs a specific account).

Also, I need your help checking on the configuration the team setups as default. Please try the features and let us know if something questions you.

Newcomers tasks are based on templates to suggest edits to newcomers. You can check the templates used on MediaWiki:NewcomerTasks.json. You can also change the templates and the help links defined there. Several templates can be added for the same task.

It you are familiar with Phabricator, here is the ticket about this deployment. Please find your wiki in the list to access all the information we used for the deployment. Please have a look at it. You can suggest changes by replying to this message.

If you wish to, you can create a list of mentors. This will activate the optional Mentorship module. Please format the list following the guidance. You need at least one mentor for each 500 new accounts created monthly on your wiki (3 mentors minimum). Are you hesitant to become a mentor? Please check the resources we have written based on other mentors' experiences. Please tell us if you are interested by creating a mentor list!

Let me know if you have any question about this deployment, please ping me! Of course, if this message is not at the right place, please move or share it (and let me know).

All the best, Trizek (WMF), 4. august 2021, kell 18:33 (EEST)

Universal Code of Conduct - Enforcement draft guidelines review

Hello all,
The Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2 drafting committee would like comments about the enforcement draft guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period is planned to begin 17 August 2021.

Community and staff members collaborated to develop these draft guidelines based on consultations, discussions, and research. These guidelines are not final but you can help move the progress forward. Provide comments about these guidelines by 17 October 2021. The committee will be revising the guidelines based upon community input.

Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome comments in any language on the draft review talk page or by email. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at local discussions, or during round-table discussions and conversation hours.

There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft guidelines:

The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large number of communities. Having a shared understanding is important. If you do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations.

Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee every two weeks. The summaries will be published here.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the draft, the community consultation or the UCoC.
Many thanks! --Mervat (WMF) (arutelu) 19. august 2021, kell 00:17 (EEST)

Wikimedia Foundation'i suurima kandidaatide arvuga juhatuse valimiste tulemused.

Suur tänu kõigile, kes osalesid 2021. aasta juhatuse valimistel. Valimiskomitee on nelja uue juhatuse liikme määramiseks läbi viidud 2021. aasta Wikimedia Foundationi juhatuse valimiste hääled üle vaadanud. Valmistel andis hääle rekordarv 6 873 inimest 214 projektikogukonnast. Enim toetust kogusid alljärgnevad neli kandidaati:

  1. Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight
  2. Victoria Doronina
  3. Dariusz Jemielniak
  4. Lorenzo Losa

Kuigi see on kandidaatide järjestus kogukonna hääletuse tulemusel, siis nad pole veel määratud juhatusse. Selleks tehakse taustauuring ning kandidaadit peavad vastama põhikirjas esildatud tingimustele. Juhatus on seadnud oletuslikuks uute liikmete kinnitamise tähtajaks käesoleva kuu lõpu.
