Intermovement in May 1990[muuda lähteteksti]

On March 30, 1990, a decision was made about the status of Estonia and so a transitional period was declared to end with the restoration of statehood on the basis of continuity. In April the same year, negotiations between the Baltic states and USSR leadership ended in vain, as the new union treaty developed by Moscow had lost its significance for the Baltic states.

As a result, pro-imperial forces became more active. The direct motivation for the protests of the so-called Intermovement was the decision of the Estonian Supreme Council on 8th May, which terminated the use of the flag, coat of arms and anthem of the Estonian SSR and restored Republic of Estonia as its official name. On 9 May, the last Soviet military parade took place on Freedom Square in Tallinn, and workers' chiefs led by Mikhail Lysenko held a picket with the Interfront in front of the Estonian Communist Party building (now Foreign Ministry) and the Estonian SSR flag was hoisted on the roof of Tallinn City Government building.

Künnap photographed both the military parade and the subsequent gathering at the statue of Lenin and tried to get the leading figures of the Intermovement in separate photographs. One of those was Jevgeni Kogan who worked in Estonian Fishing Industry Production Team "Ocean" and where Künnap worked as a diver, although he had never personally met Kogan or interacted with him.
