Night Song Festivals[muuda lähteteksti]

During the 1988 Tallinn Old Town Days, the night song festivals were held from June 6th to June 13th, where young people went to sing together every night. On September 11th the same year, the festival „Estonian Song“ was held at the Song Festival Grounds, where political demands were made and patriotic songs were singed and listened. The performance of patriotic songs played a huge role in the protest movement at that time and according to that we also call this period a „singing revolution“.

The organization of nocturnal song festivals was the largest and also the most popular form of protest against the ruling order and system, organized by the Estonian national forces in the late 1980s. Above all their importance was to create a sense of belonging among people, which in turn was a prerequisite for the subsequent revolutionary political events. In addition, large proportion of the participants in the song festivals were under 35 years old.

The main organizer of the first night song festival, Enno Selirand, invited Künnap to be the main photographer of that event. In total, he managed to attend night song festivals two or three times. Accordingly, the following pictures are taken on different evenings.
