Back to the mountains[muuda lähteteksti]
From 1984, Künnap worked as a rescuer in mountains every summer until the collapse of the Soviet Union. His job may have lasted longer and he was called back, but soon it became quite difficult for an Estonian to get a permit to enter then still Russian SSR. He spent time in mountains in August 1991 and wondered how he would return home if he had a passport of a non-existent country due to the Soviet Union´s passport being no longer relevant.
Künnap had made for himself blue-black-and-white flag years earlier and it accompanied him in mountains. For example, since 1987, he has pictures with this flag on the background of Korzhenevskaya´s (7105 m) and Khan Tengri´s (7010 m) peaks. In 1989 it was taken to the top of Lenin Peak (7134 m) as well.
The following photos show the move to the peak of Korzhenevskaya in 1990. Mikhail Sobelman who was also involved in cleaning up Pikk Hermann tower in 1989 is lying in front of the flag. Sobelman later moved to Israel.
