Remembering the past

[muuda lähteteksti]

One of the greatest crimes against humanity committed by the Soviet authorities in Estonia and elsewhere in the Baltics, was the massive forced and violent resettlement of people in 1941 and 1949. The first deportation, June deportation, took place on the night of June 14, 1941 when more than 10,000 people were taken from their homes to various prison camps in Russian SSR, many of whom were later executed or killed, while others continued working and living in inhumane conditions. In total only about half of all those deported in 1941 later returned to Estonia.

On June 14, 1989 a large gathering was held in Lindamägi, Tallinn, to commemorate the victims of the June deportation. The following series of photos depict this event. At the same time, the photographs also depict an initial gathering in Tammsaare Park and blue-black-and-white flag in the Pikk Hermann tower was lowered into half a rod.
