The first Estonian attempt of an encyclopedia is the uncompleted Karl August Hermann's Eesti Üleüldise teaduse raamat ehk encyklopädia konversationi-lexikon, see on kõige inimlise teadmise haridusline sõnakiri hulga kujutustega kaunistatud. The first volume (A) came out in 1900-1903, the second volume in 1906. I think this could be digitalized.

In 1932-1937 Eesti entsüklopeedia in 8 volumes was issued (supplement) in 1940. I don't know about its copyright status. Andres 12:02, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Andres! Could you find these works and send them to me in Sweden? What would that cost? Project Runeberg is very careful with copyright. But if we cannot digitize a work this year, maybe we can do so next year. Eventually the copyright expires and the works fall into the public domain. (For Mugasto's illustrations, this happens at the end of 2007, as I mentioned.) For encyclopedias and journals, there are usually so many contributing authors and illustrators that it becomes practically impossible to investigate everybody's death year. Therefore, we have taken the approach of waiting 70 years after the year of first publication, as if they were works of anonymous authors. Nobody has protested so far. After all, there is very little commercial value in old encyclopedias or journals. This is a practical approach that everybody seem to be happy with. In the case of K-A Hermann, he lived 1851-1909 (says ERB) so all his works are in the public domain already. Did he write other interesting works? --LA2 19:58, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Let's begin from Hermann's work. It seems to be rare. I don't know if I can buy it (I would like to own it myself too as I find it very interesting). Would a good xerocopy be enough? I have to do some research. A book about him contains several facsimile pages and excerpts from his encyclopedia (Esimesest algusest meie ajani. Karl August Hermann 150. Koostanud Urmas Sutrop. Tallinn: Eesti Keele Sihtasutus, 2001).

He was a versatile man. He studied theology, was a composer of chorals and choir songs and composed a Singspiel, was a choir conductor, a collector of folk music and a linguist, coined many Estonian words. He had a PhD in linguistics from Leipzig. He wrote an Estonian grammar (facsimile in the above-mentioned work), a history of Estonian literature, writings about music and history, and some poetry and short stories. He edited several newspapers, a music journal and a literary journal. He also was a lecturer of Estonian at the University of Tartu.

By the way, another interesting work is Eesti Biograafiline Leksikon (1926-1929) which already has been digitalized along with some other books. There also is a newspaper digitalization project. Andres 21:26, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Xerox copies are both a lot of work to produce and risk to degrade the quality, so I would not recommend this. Hermann is an interesting person, you should write a Wikipedia article about him. Tarkvarastuudio.ee/grafo was a nice resource. Those people have good taste. However, they have not run OCR on the books. The search function only searches the list of books, not their contents. Project Runeberg has a similar "Svenskt biografiskt handlexikon" on http://runeberg.org/sbh/ with the difference that you can reach the OCR text directly by Google and link directly to each book page, e.g. http://runeberg.org/sbh/a0126.html -- Do you think I may borrow the scanned images from "Grafo" and try to run OCR on them? As far as I understand, they are a software office and they have orders from governmental and self-government institutions and public libraries. I don't know them. You can contact them, their general e-address is info(at)tarkvarastuudio.ee, on their website there are other addresses.

I don't know your technology, I guess xerox could be good enough. Anyway, this would be the simplest solution. Could an interlibrary loan be a solution? I just think about other solutions for the case the work can't be bought. Andres 22:49, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The Võro literary language is quite new but there are books in South Estonian, including the New Testament. More about Võro you could ask Kasutaja:Võrok. Andres 14:23, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

As far as I know, the Ingrian Finns had no separate literary language. Sometimes also Izhorian is called Ingrian. There are no books in Izhorian either, as far as I know. Andres 14:31, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
