the day, returns to the front of the altar,at the lowest step, and there begins the service. (A server,or altar-boy, kneeling at his left, answers the responses in ^ The reason of this distinction is founded on the fact that in all the ancientchurches there used to be built, generally in the nave, a small altar, at which ihe bishopwould seat himself before Mass to receive the obeisance of the people as they passed in,and impart them his blessing ; for which reason this altar used to be generally knownas the Salutatorium. When the entire congregation had gathered, his lordship wouldvest at this small altar, and then proceed in solemn procession to the sanctuary, wherehe would begin Mass. When the practice of building these appurtenances ceased, themain altar of the church served in their stead ; and hence the origin of the present prac-tice. This may be gleaned from the Cmvemoniale Episcoporiim and the other worksthat mcxition the Secretarium, as the Salutatorium was sometimes called.
