English: The Leclancé cell consists of a zinc rod to the left of the figure, immersed in a solution of ordinary sal ammoniac, and a plate of carbon put inside a porous pot, and packed tightly with a mixture of the needle form of manganese peroxide and broken gas-carbon. Both the mauganese peroxide and the gas-carbon must be sifted to remove the dust, in order that as much surface as possible may be exposed to the action of the liquid.
