Theodore, and that built by DogeGiovanni Participazio in 829, between S. Theodore andthe ducal palace, to receive the body of S. Mark whichwas brought from Alexandria when that city was takenby the Moslem. This first church of S. Mark wasburned during an insurrection in 976 in which DogePietro Candiano IV was killed. It was restored by thenext Doge Pietro Orseolo I, but about the middle of thenth century it was entirely re-built by Doge DomenicoContarini, and was finished and consecrated under DogeVitale Falier in 1085. If as most authorities suppose the old churches ofS. Mark and S. Theodore, as well as that of S. Zaccaria,were basilican it would seem that Latin traditions werestronger at Venice in the 9th century than Greek. Butthe new S. Marks is frankly Greek in plan and style, and is Firstchurch ofS. Marks is in plan a Greek cross (Fig. 51), witha slight prolongation of the western arm ; and it has acentral dome, surrounded by four others which unlikethose at Constantinople are lighted by windows as wellas the central one. The Church of the Apostles alsoseems to have had triforium galleries for the women, asthe Greek usage was, which are wanting at S.
