Tabernacle; and only the highpriest was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place—and thatonly at certain times. Yet all Israelites were permitted to enterthe outer Court and to bring their offerings which the priestssacrificed upon the altar. III. The Temple. a. During the reign of King Solomon, the Temple wasbuilt. This was a magnificent building. The dimensions ofthe temple proper, were just twice as large as those of thetabernacle. The interior arrangement was also the same asthat of the tabernacle. The temple, however, had many morevessels and these were larger. Solomons Temple, as it isgenerally called, stood about 400 years and then was destroyedby the Chaldeans. b. After the return of the Jews from their captivity,this temple was rebuilt; but it was not so magnificent as theTemple of Solomon. c. The temple which was in Jerusalem at the time ofJesus is known as the Temple of King Herod, because Herodthe Great had rebuilt and enlarged it at great cost so that its 21S BIBLE MANUAL.

These synagogues were places in which theJews assembled for the purpose of studying the Law of Mosesand the Scriptures of the Prophets. It is generally acceptedthat these synagogues originated during the time of the Baby-lonian captivity. At the time of Jesus, such synagogues werefound in almost every place where Jews sojourned.
