Roman mount, inlaid with enamel and millefiori
Kirjeldus
English: A cast copper-alloy mount inlaid with enamel and millefiori dating to the Roman period, c. 50-300.

The mount is a circular disc with a flat reverse and three shallow cells of circumscribed circles separated by raised borders on the surface. Each cell has been inlaid with enamel containing millefiori detail. The inner circle has a diameter of 17.3mm and is decorated with 26 red and 23 blue enamel squares arranged in a chequerboard patter. Each red square contains a millefiori subsquare composed of tesselated blue and white rectangles, with the white at the corners and centre of each subsquare and the blue occupying the centre section of each length of side. The blue chequerboard squares contain millefiori flowers with a yellow centre circumscribed by a red ring with 8 sub-triangular petals. The middle circle has an outer diameter of 26.3mm and is inlaid with white enamel containing 14 millefiori flowers with a yellow centre circumscribed by a red ring with 8 sub-triangular blue petals. The outer circle has a diameter of 38.4mm and is inlaid with blue enamel bearing two rings of millefiori flowers of the same variety as found in the central circle (yellow and red centre with white petals).

The surface enamel is complete, though a fracture of approximately 10% of the outer circle has removed some surface enamel, though the enamel has not been completely removed in this area. The quality of production of enamel and the detail of the millefiori is quite high.

The reverse of the mount is undecorated, but blue enamel can be seen filling a circular perforation in the centre. A sub-circular patch near one edge may also indicate a point of contact/connection with another object.

The mount may have been attached to a separate pin and catchplate fitting to form a brooch, though it could also have decorated harness or furniture.

A similar disc with millefiori decoration is found in the British Museum (reg no 1891,0327.9), though with different detail in decoration, from Chepstow in Monmouthshire and dated to the 2nd-3rd century.
