The Maus (Mouse) was the heaviest fully enclosed armoured fighting vehicle ever built. Only two prototypes were completed and only one was fitted with an actual turret, the other only having a mock-up. The project was cancelled in August 1944 before any of the production examples were completed. The two prototypes continued testing until they were deliberately destroyed ahead of the advancing Allied forces. Despite this, enough components remained to allow the Red Army to reassemble one complete example and return it to Kubinka for testing. Later preserved, it combines the hull of the first prototype ‘V1’ with the turret from the second prototype ‘V2’. It is on display in what is best known as Hall 5 of the Kubinka Tank Museum, although its official title is now Pavilion 5 in Area 2 of the Park Patriot museum.
