Kriminaalromaan on romaan, mille traditsioonilisteks osadeks on kuritegu, selle uurimine ja lahendus, traditsioonilisteks tegelaskujudeks ohver, kuriteo uurija ja kurjategija.

Ajalugu

Esimeseks tänapäevaseks kriminaaljutuks peetakse Edgar Allan Poe teost "Mõrvad Rue Morgue'il" (1841). Seda on nimetatud ka romaaniks, ehkki ta ei vasta pikkuselt romaani nõuetele. Esimene kriminaalromaan oli Wilkie Collinsi "Kuukivi". Tuntud klassikaliste detektiivromaanide autorid on Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes ja doktor Watson), Agatha Christie (Hercule Poirot ja Arthur Hastings), Georges Simenon (inspektor Maigret), John Dickson Carr (ka pseudonüümi all Carter Dickson), Erle Stanley Gardner (advokaat Perry Mason, tema erasekretär Della Street ja neid abistav detektiiv Paul Drake) jt.

USAs 1930ndatel esile kerkinud nn karmi koolkonna romaanides püütakse kriminaalset olustikku ja tegelaste kõnepruuki esitada võimalikult realistlikult ja nende romaanide õhustik on mõrvatagi kuritegudest läbi imbunud. Ühtlasi taotletakse nendes romaanides sotsiaalset kommentaari ja suuremat psühholoogilist usutavust. Näiteks Eestis tõlgituima selle suuna esindaja Raymond Chandleri eeskujuks olid Dashiell Hammetti vähesed romaanid.

Süžee ja selle komponendid

Detektiiviromaanis, mis on kriminaalromaani tüüpidest kõige levinum, on peategelaseks enamasti kuriteo uurija. Uurija on traditsiooniliselt detektiiv, kes peab detektiivibürood, töötab vabakutselisena või siis teeb detektiivitööd muu tegevuse kõrvalt, kuid võib olla ka politseiametnik või advokaat. Traditsiooniliselt vastandub detektiiv muudele tegelastele oma intellektuaalse võimekuse ning suutlikkuse poolest näha läbi kurjategija plaane.

Kuigi enamasti rajatakse tegevus kõige äärmuslikumale kuriteole inimese vastu, mõrvale, pole klassikalises detektiivromaanis niivõrd tähtis kuritegu kui ebamoraalne akt. Olulisem on selle lahenduskäik, millele lugeja saab kaasa elada. Kurjategija on kriminaalromaanis tavaliselt antikangelane, kes püüab kuriteo avastamist takistada, peites asitõendeid ja jälgi, lavastades süüta isikuid süüdi ja tekitades valejälgi. Lugeja ülesandeks on püüda kurjategijale siiski narratiivi arenedes jälile saada. Detektiiv on käsitletav kurjategija jälgedes orienteeruva ideaalse lugejana, kelle poole reaalne lugeja püüdleb.

Tavapärane tegelaskuju on ka detektiivi abiline, kes püüab detektiivi meetodit ja mõtlemisviisi mõistatada, kuid ei suuda seda lõpuni ja on mingis mõttes lugeja alter ego. Tihti on vabakutseline ja oma iseäralikest meetoditest lähtuv detektiiv vastandatud ka politseiuurijale, kelle tavapärastest meetoditest kõigi kuritegude lahendamiseks ei piisa. Vastavalt sellele on nt Sherlock Holmesil enda väljatöötatud "deduktsiooni meetod", Hercule Poirot rõhutab salapäraselt, et ta kasutab kuriteo lahendamiseks "oma halle ajurakke" jne.
